Available now! The Donkey Mill Farm is a working farm with 600 cocoa trees. We offer two experiences that are about 1.5-2 hours long where we explore Hawaiian plants, coffee, macadamia and then focus on cacao/cocoa. Visitors will pick cocoa pods, open them, and visit our fermentory and bean drying racks. They will finish with a tasting of 5-7 chocolates made from cocoa beans of varying Big Island regions. This tour is offered on Wednesday afternoons at 2:30pm and is an off-trail walking tour at a faster pace than our stroll. You will learn about cacao/chocolate, coffee, macadamia and other plants and food that grow on this tropical farm. This tour is a bit of a faster pace and shorter depth than our "Stroll" but requires more walking up and down the hilly landscape.
While most of our cacao is grown in the wet and volcanic Puna District on the east side of Big Island, the Donkey Mill Farm was added in 2021 from one of our Kona farmers who sold us their coffee and cocoa beans but wanted to retire. This farm has everything and is a natural, yet working farm.
